Enjoy this magnificent trip which is one of the most beautiful and spectacular bus tours in Norway! The bus starts in the center of Geiranger and goes via Flydalsjuvet to Dalsnibba mountain. There is a photo stop at Flydalsjuvet and a longer stop at Dalsnibba. The 12.10 departure from Geiranger also stops at Langvatn. At Dalsnibba you can go out on the “Geiranger Skywalk”. Glass railings and metal grate on the platform floor provides spectacular views of Geiranger center, the Geirangerfjord and the mountains and Blåbreen glacier. When you get to Dalsnibba you can also walk around and enjoy the fresh and crisp Norwegian mountan air!

Geiranger Church

The Geiranger church was completed in 1842, one year after the old church burnt down at the same location. There was also another church here before that. The church, which was built by Hans Klipe using timber with cog and notch joints, has an octagonal foundation, a shape that became common for churches in Sunnmøre towards the end of the 1700s. While the church tower in the oldest octagonal churches rested upon four pillars located in the central nave, the purlin roof in the Geiranger church is strong enough to carry the tower which rises from the central point of the roof. For the church's 100th anniversary, which was celebrated in 1946 due to the war, the church received a new altar, altar rails, a pulpit, a cancelli, annunciators and a new frame around the altarpiece. Everything was made by Einar Flydal and decorated by Lars Tynes in Neo Baroque style with elements from Norse ornamentation based on drawings by Per Vigeland. The altarpiece was painted by Harald Bruun in 1903 and shows Jesus who comforts the ill and grieving. The main motif on the pulpit is of a pelican that pecks itself in the chest to feed its children with the drops of blood. This symbolises Jesus who sacrificed his own life to give humans eternal life.

Hotel Union Geiranger

Hotel Union was built in 1891 originally in wood inspired by dragon style or Swiss style. Julie and Karl Mjelva bought Hotel Union Geiranger in 1899. The enterprising family also started a car factory, a power station and a cooking oven factory there. Hotel Union was expanded and rebuilt several times. What remained of the wooden hotel was removed in 1979. Since then, several additions have been made, including a modern conference section, a swimming pool, a new floor with 13 suites, a vintage car exhibition, a night club, and a spa as well as new outdoor and indoor spaces. The strong Union atmosphere characterised by quality and service through generations, has been passed on with Monja and Sindre Mjelva as hosts. Today they are the hosts in this fourth hotel generation.

The garage for veteran cars

The garage for vintage cars in the hotel houses a unique collection of vintage cars. Many of the dashing cars were used to drive tourists around Geiranger in the 1920s and 1930s, and are still in working order. One of the cars is exhibited in the reception area, while eight others make up the museum of vintage cars in the hotel. Each car has its own unique story. The hotel guests can rent the cars with a driver for shorter trips, and are guaranteed a unique experience.

Norwegian Fjord Centre

(Photo: Kristoffer Nærø Ytterland og Rune Hagen) Geiranger Fjordsenter is an interactive knowledge and adventure center focusing on Norwegian fjord culture and the Geirangerfjorden World Heritage. The center provides insight in the fjord culture, especially life as was on the many abandoned mountain farms along Storfjord. You may experience a unique and informative history of a robust people living in a spectacular environment. Today's technology is used to convey information about avalanches, power development, flora and fauna, road construction, tourism and transport as well as daily life and nature. The multi-media show "Frå fjell til fjord" ("From Mountains to Fjord") shows this World Heritage Site throughout the four seasons. It features a collection of magnificent images of the landscape, from the high mountains to the fjord, accompanied by a specially-composed musical soundtrack. It is a great way to learn about the history, culture and nature of the area. The Norwegian Fjord Center is also an art gallery where well known Norwegian contemporary artists present their work. There is a small, nice café with a selection of dishes based on local cuisine. The souvenir shop sells Norwegian arts and crafts, the World Heritage Art Folder, promotional items, and a wide range of postcards and books about Geiranger and the Geiranger Fjord.

Geiranger Brewery

The brewery is located in the heart of Geiranger and aims to produce beer that matches the quality of the nature in Norway's fjord landscape. Geiranger Brewery was established in 2015 with a passion for beer and food.

Geiranger Geo Nature park

Below Flydalsjuvet in Geiranger there is a special nature park displaying local minerals, rocks and plants. Another stop worth making is by the Dynamittsfossen waterfall and the different wooden sculptures, all made with a chain saw by the Finnish sculptor Jarmo Kesala.

Storsæterfossen

Storsæterfossen is a waterfall in Geiranger on the northern side of the valley. Walking there takes about one hour from Vesterås farm. It is a nice hike with beautiful scenery, and the reward when reaching the top is the chance to go behind the cascade. Banisters have been put up for safety.

Flydalsjuvet

Flydalsjuvet provides a breathtaking view and is a nice spot for pictures of Geiranger and the Geiranger fjord. The most used picture for the promotion of Norwegian tourism was taken here. Flydalsjuvet is easily accessible from county road 63, about 4 km from the centre of Geiranger in the direction of Grotli. The viewpoints are on two levels, one above the other, with a walking path connecting the two. The viewpoints were modernised in the National Tourist Routes project, and the new installations were officially opened in a ceremony on June 21st 2006. On the lower level, there is an installation called Fjordsetet, which was opened by Queen Sonja in September 2003 in connection with the 10th anniversary of the local company Fjord Norge AS.

Knuten

Knuten ("the knot") is a section of the road that twists above itself to gain height like a knot. It is no longer part of the road, but it is still possible to spot it when passing by. This makes it one of the country's first traffic hubs. The construction was awarded a gold medal for outstanding engineering at the world exhibition in Paris in 1900 and received the following commentary: You provide a good image of the stunning Norwegian mountain landscape. The road was partially rerouted in the 1960s, but its path is pretty much the same.

Geirangerveien

We are now on the Geirangerveien road, which connects Skjåk and Geiranger on national road 64. Originally this was a narrow path for horses. Plans to improve the road appeared around 1850, but the funding only arrived 31 years later in 1881. Up to 300 men worked every summer on the 22 km stretch of road which was finished eight years later. The road has the maximum allowed gradient, nine stone bridges, 29 turns at 180° and 5,364 large rocks placed along the road to prevent vehicles from driving off the road. The highest point is 1,038 meters above sea level. The hotel has a long tradition of taking tourists up to viewpoints like Flydalsjuvet and later, from 1939, all the way up to Dalsnibba almost 1,500 metres above sea level. The road is closed during winter, but usually opens in May.

Blåfjellbrakka

The Blåfjellbrakka hut dates back to 1904 and has been well preserved as part of the Geirangerveien road. Next to the hut there is a house used to store road gravel that was rebuilt at the same time as the hut was restored in 1989. Today the building is used as a holiday cottage for employees of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.

Djupvasshytta

The Djupvasshytta hotel is located in the mountains, surrounded by beautiful scenery. Djupvasshytta is located 103 metres above sea level, and is an amazing location for anyone who appreciates a peaceful stay surrounded by stunning nature. With the 200 metre deep lake Djupvatn, the Blåfjellsbreen glacier and Dalsnibba all located in immediate proximity, you are as close to nature as possible.

Nibbeveien

The Nibbeveien road takes you from the Djupvasshytta hotel to the Dalsnibba viewpoint located nearly 1,500 metres above sea level. The viewpoint offers a stunning view of the wild, snow-covered mountains, clean air and a view of the world heritage site, all at once. Opened in 1939, the Nibbeveien road is a pioneer project and a symbol of the tourism in Geiranger. The official opening took place after the war in 1948, in connection with the arrival of the first tourist ship in the Geiranger fjord. The exciting trip up to the top and the amazing panoramic view have become a natural part of any visit to Geiranger. At the summit, there is a small souvenir shop and toilet facilities. An automatic toll station was installed along the road up to Dalsnibba and the road is open from June to October. Coins or cards are accepted as payment at the toll station.

Dalsnibba

On the Dalsnibba mountain there is a fantastic viewpoint towards fjords, mountains and valleys in the world heritage site. The Geiranger Skywalk was officially opened in August 2016. The foundation is made of glass grills and railings so that you can look right down at Geiranger, the fjord and the surrounding mountains. With a free fall of about 500 metres, you'll experience a sensation of floating in the air, even if you're of course safe the whole time. From Geiranger and up to your current location, the distance is 21 km and 1,746 metres in height. Dalsnibba is one of Norway's most spectacular viewpoints, easily accessible above the world's most famous fjord, the Geiranger fjord. A trip here is an unforgettable experience and a natural part of any visit to Geiranger, this is an experience you can't miss. In the new service facility at the summit of Dalsnibba you can purchase local food. There is also a souvenir shop with a range of products you won't find anywhere else.
