Stockfish - Fish on Drying Racks

You are now standing by one of the many "hjell" (drying racks) in Lofoten. These wooden structures, up to eight meters high, testify to a tradition several hundred years old. Here, fish, usually cod, is hung to dry in the cold winter air. The process is natural and requires no preservatives. The fish is cleaned, the head removed, and the body split before it is hung up. The drying takes several months, depending on the weather. These "cathedrals of Lofoten" remind us of the winter storms and the cold that create the dried fish. You can imagine how the fish slowly dries, but retains all the nutrients. Dried fish is known for its unique taste and texture, used in dishes like bacalao. Svolvær Church

Let's embark on a journey back in time, to a period when Svolvær was a city in growth and development. You now stand before Svolvær Church, a monument majestically rising from Langåsen, seamlessly blending into the natural landscape. This is a tangible testament to the city's driving forces, the known and unknown individuals who, under the most fluctuating economic conditions, decided to erect a monumental church building. "The city wanted a church," and their dream became a reality. After several decades of tireless fundraising and countless hours of volunteer work, the church on Langhaugen was completed in 1934. This is a monument to the city's willpower and community spirit, a reminder of what a society can achieve when it stands together. As you observe the architecture of the church, you will notice some remarkable details. The tower is uniquely positioned over the choir, breaking with conventional ecclesiastical architecture where the tower is often placed over the entrance. The crucifix that forms the church's altarpiece was carved by woodcarver Andreas Nilsskog (1879-1940) from Drevja, and is a replica of the Mosvik crucifix from the mid-1200s. The original is located at the Natural History and Architectural Museum in Trondheim. In 2009, on its 75th anniversary, the church underwent extensive renovation. This again underscored the strong community spirit in Svolvær. Through local fundraising and volunteer work, over 1.6 million kroner were collected for the renovation work. The accounts showed well over 900 hours of volunteer work! Since then, Svolvær Church has become a stronger symbol of the city's community spirit and inclusiveness, a place where everyone is welcome and belongs. Vågan church

War Memorial Museum

Gunnar Berg

Berg was born in 1863 on Svinøya in Svolvær, and is known as one of the most significant painters from Northern Norway.
