Molde – Bud fishing village (round trip)

Molde - Bud - Molde Less than an hour from Molde, situated on the ocean’s edge, you find the small fishing village of Bud. In the 16th and 17th century, Bud was the biggest trading post between Bergen and Trondheim. Today, Bud is still an active and charming fishing village. In Bud you can enjoy the sight of beautiful boathouses, visit some of the small shops or one of the cafés or restaurants. You may also visit Bud Coastal Museum. Bud Coastal Museum contains the Ergan Coastal fort - a German built WW2 coastal fort, which today is a war memorial museum, and the Coastal Culture Centre, which is an exhibition about the cultural history, marine biology and maritime archaeology from Bud and the region. You can buy entrance tickets to Bud Coastal Museum here: romsdalsmuseet.trekksoft.com. Ergan also has exceptional views over the fishing village of Bud and the waters of Hustadvika. Another great possibility in Bud is to take a walk along “Kyststien” (the coastal path). This path goes mainly along the sea front and takes you through Bud and along the coast with a fantastic view to the great ocean. The estimated time to complete the path is 45 minutes (7 kilometers). https://travellikethelocals.trekksoft.com/en_GB/activity/81224/rundtur-til-fiskevaret-bud

Molde – Ona island (round trip)

Molde - Ona - Molde This round trip takes you to Ona – a tiny island community out in the ocean. The trip starts in Molde by bus (and a short ferry trip) to Aukra and Småge ferry harbor, where the ferry to Ona starts. The ferry to Ona goes via the island Orten, Finnøya and Sandøya before reaching Ona. Passengers to Ona should stay on the ferry during the short stays at the other islands. Ona is Norway’s southernmost traditional fishing village and has a permanent population of approx. 25. The island also has a ceramics workshop and a small kiosk/shop. In the summer (typically June - August), there’s a café and possibilities for overnight stays. On “Onakalven”, the island highest point, you find Ona lighthouse. From the lighthouse, you have a magnificent view of the ocean and towards the mainland. Ona is a tranquil place where you can thoroughly enjoy the peace and quiet! The trip to Ona is as fantastic in the summer as in the winter. Remember, though, that the island is located out in the ocean and the weather conditions can be harsh. Therefore, it is important to bring warm clothes and windproof clothes. If you go there outside of the peak season in the summer, we recommend bringing some food and drinks as well, as the island’s shop has a limited offering. https://travellikethelocals.trekksoft.com/en_GB/activity/80892/rundtur-til-ona-oya-i-havgapet

Trollstigen utsikt

Norwegian Scenic Route Geiranger - Trollstigen

The drive along Trollstigen is undoubtedly more dramatic than most people are used to, but what is special about driving in Norway is that in fact people live just about everywhere. Even on the narrowest mountain ledge or small crag there will be a house. We are bound to the landscape and the natural surroundings through settlements that have offered us a livelihood throughout history. Geiranger-Trollstigen offers numerous highlights, and the eleven hairpin bends of Trollstigen as well as the view from Ørnesvingen down to the Geirangerfjord may set your pulse racing. Lush valleys, sheltered strawberry-growing areas, precipitous mountains and vantage points guaranteed to make you dizzy offer some of Norway’s most scenic views. Allow plenty of time for the trip − stops are welcome whether you want the challenge of a hike to a lofty summit or just to enjoy the view. For those who take the time, there’s such a lot more to be discovered.

The walkway consists of latticework (“grids”) “floating” above the terrain, and is suitable for or anyone. The service building at Eldhusøya, with its distinct architecture that falls into the terrain, has a café and toilets. (Open Saturdays and Sundays in the spring and every day 1st June – 31st August.) After the stop at the Atlantic Road you go back to Kårvåg and then on to Kvernes stave church. You have some time at Kårvåg before the bus to Kvernes departs, and we recommend that you visit Bjartmars Favorittkro for lunch. This is local restaurant situated just a few minutes walk from the bus stop (back along the road towards the Atlantic road). You have the possibility to buy a lunch coupon as an add-on to this trip. Kvernes stave church is a beautiful and special stave church. Dating from approx. 1300 AD., is one of the youngest of the Norwegian stave churches. Inside the church you can see a choir screen with crucifix and royal monogram, a baroque pulpit, and painted acuantus decorations. The altarpiece is from 1475. Located with a magnificent view over the Kvernes fjord and the Frei fjord, the church bears witness of a strong ritual and religious of this place, also in pre-Christian times. Next to the church you also find Gamle Kvernes bygdemuseum, a museum with old buildings, an archealogical exhibition and various activities.
